An armed man attempting a late-night robbery at a Waffle House eatery in Atlanta was surprised when some quick-thinking customers took matters into their own hands.
The incident took place Monday just after 2 a.m., when police said Ashton Macafee, 20, walked into the establishment and pointed his weapon at employees and patrons, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
“Nobody move and open the cash register,” he allegedly said.
He didn’t know the two men sitting at a nearby booth were off-duty police officer Jonathan Sutton and his friend Evans Chad Pollard, a security guard who was also off the clock. Mr. Pollard pulling his service weapon and firing two shots, hitting the suspect.
“I felt that not only my life, but everyone’s life was in danger, so I had to do what I had to do,” Mr. Pollard told the Constitution.
He and Mr. Sutton made sure the suspect stayed put until authorities arrived.
Mr. Macafee was taken to a nearby hospital, where police officers met him and put him under guard. His condition wasn’t known as of late Monday.
