OPINION:
The Washington Times makes several good points in the editorial “A debtor’s alternative” (July 30). I would add that the government is also largely responsible for the proliferation of college majors with very poor employment prospects, what we referred to as “basket weaving” when I was an engineering student.
At the same time, employers are in desperate need of people with high-tech skills, and many are recruiting immigrants to fill those needs. Perhaps the availability of loans (and their cost) should be tied to employment statistics that reflect the opportunities that will exist for a student’s chosen field. Why should taxpayers subsidize a student who wants to pursue an occupation with little or no demand, when our society has so many unfilled needs?
