The United States released five inmates at Guantanamo Bay recently — a quiet attempt at jump-starting peace talks with members of the Taliban, an Israeli news outlet reported.
A top U.S. official said the inmates were let go with the condition they would not commit any violent acts, Ynet News reported. The report didn’t identify the names, nationalities or suspected crimes of the detainees.
The United States under President Obama announced a willingness to talk directly with Taliban leaders several months ago, as a means of smoothing Afghanistan relations.
Ynet News said the White House recently removed the Taliban from its list of enemies, in further preparation for the talks.
