A surfers’ event in Huntington Beach, Calif., ended in mayhem late Sunday, as riot police were called to the streets to disperse violent crowds and break up numerous fights.
CBS reported the police — dressed in full riot gear — referred to the incident as a “major event” that came on the heels of the U.S. Open of Surfing, as attendees refused to leave the downtown area of Huntington Beach.
Crowds damaged city vehicles, portable toilets, store windows and newspaper racks, CBS said.
Local police were forced to summon all its off-duty officers and even called on neighboring cities to send officers. At least eight were arrested on charges related to disrupting the peace, but no injuries were reported, CBS reported.
