Ousted President Mohammed Morsi has been arrested and detained for the last 15 days for allegedly contacting Hamas to help with his 2011 jail break, Egypt’s state-run media reported Friday.
This is the first news of Mr. Morsi’s whereabouts since the July 3 military coup that tossed him from power.
A judge ordered his detention, The Associated Press reported.
His detention may be expanded, as the investigation into his ties with Hamas continues.
MENA, the state-run media outlet, said Mr. Morsi is being queried about his alleged partnership with Hamas “to carry out anti-state acts, attacking police stations, army officers and storming prisons, setting fire to one prison and enabling inmates to flee, including himself, as well as premeditated killing of officers, soldiers and prisoners,” AP reported.
News of his location comes just as large protests are set for the streets of Egypt on Friday.
