MSNBC television host Ed Schultz posed this question at the end of a recent broadcast: Should race relations be a required course in every public school?
And his answer: “Now I’m going to vote yes on this,” he said.
As of Tuesday, 93 percent of those who case votes on his website agreed.
A sampling of poll respondents’ comments: “Don’t know why anyone would oppose. What harm would it do?” And “Rush [Limbaugh] wouldn’t be interested in teaching in public schools. Rush makes 50 million dollars a year.” And one more: “I truly believe if the republicans take a race class maybe America would be a better place.”
Mr. Schultz cited his reasons for wishing a race relations class in every school: “I believe that this has to be part of our public school discussion, that confrontation is not an option. That we need to love one another. And that loving your neighbor is what the almighty wanted us to do. Now if you’re not faith-based, at least you can respect the human rights of someone else. So we can find common ground throughout this entire conversation.”
Following, he introduced his featured guest: The Rev. Jesse Jackson. The show was broadcast on Saturday evening.
