Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Maryland Democrat, is vigorously attempting to shift the deck chairs on the Internal Revenue Service’s Titanic to make it seem like the IRS committed no wrongs in the targeting of conservative groups seeking nonprofit status for their organizations (“Treasury IG needs to explain scope of IRS investigation, Rep. Elijah Cummings says,” Web, July 12).

One has to wonder which planet Mr. Cummings lives on. The fact that this targeting took place has been admitted to and an apology rendered already by Lois Lerner, now on leave from the IRS where she headed up the Tax-Exempt Status group. The IRS inspector general also has conducted an investigation that confirms this practice.

Regardless of the facts, Mr. Cummings seems to think that he and the Democrats can prove that the obvious never happened. Of course, it must be remembered that Democrats would deny anything, regardless of what the facts show, in order to avoid political embarrassment — especially with elections nearing. Mr. Cummings is only perpetuating the obvious.
