The Washington Capitals have placed defenseman Jeff Schultz on waivers.
The Capitals made the move Tuesday and are expected to try to buy out the final year of Schultz’s contract.
Schultz was set to enter the final year of a four-year, $11 million deal. He led the league with a plus-50 plus-minus rating in 2009-10 but was a healthy scratch for much of last season, appearing in only 26 games.
The Capitals can buy out Schultz’s deal if he has cleared waivers by noon Wednesday
Schultz asked to be traded earlier this year once he realized his playing time was diminishing under new coach Adam Oates.
