George Zimmerman won’t get his gun back any time soon — the Department of Justice has requested a hold on all evidence used in his second-degree murder trial for the death of Trayvon Martin, a law enforcement agent announced late Thursday.
Mr. Zimmerman was cleared of second-degree murder charges last Saturday for the February 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Martin. The gun he used in the shooting, a 9mm pistol, was supposed to be returned to him before the Justice Department intervened.
An official who spoke on condition of anonymity told the New York Post that the hold is standard procedure, and does not necessarily mean that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will order a new investigation and civil prosecution of Mr. Zimmerman.
Some civil rights attorneys say new charges against Mr. Zimmerman aren’t likely to withstand constitutional muster.
