A Saudi judge ordered that a man who caused the amputation of another Saudi’s leg with a gunshot must now face the same fate: He must have his leg cut off.
Emirates 24/7 reported recently that Talal Al Shammari shot Mohammed Al Mutairi in the leg during a fight several years ago in the Dammam community. Doctors couldn’t save Mr. Mutairi’s leg and decided to amputate it in order to save his life.
As punishment, the court said Mr. Shammari must undergo the same procedure.
Still, the court left open one option: Mr. Shammari could instead pay blood money, called diya, to the victim, in the amount of 1.5 million riyals — almost $400,000, Emirates 24/7 reported.
“Mediation efforts by a number of tribe leaders and dignitaries have succeeded in persuading Mutairi’s family to accept diya. Shammari’s family is now appealing for public help to pay the sum and save their son’s life,” another local media outlet reported.
