It’s most likely Hillary Clinton in 2016, said former senior White House strategist David Axelrod on Friday.
If not Mrs. Clinton, then Vice President Joseph R. Biden, he said, in a morning broadcast.
“I think that Hillary Clinton probably will be the candidate,” he said, on MSNBC. “If she doesn’t run, I think Biden will run.”
His comments are the boldest he’s made to date about the identity of the Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential candidate, The Hill reported. Mr. Axelrod said in January statements reported by The Wall Street Journal only that Mrs. Clinton would be a “very strong” presidential candidate.
Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Biden have both said they’d consider the role.
Mr. Axelrod suggested Mrs. Clinton has the political assets to fend off any challengers.
“There are formidable people,” Mr. Axelrod said. “But she has undeniable assets that would put her in a strong position relative to the rest of the field, and relative to the Republicans.”
