Martin Luther King III said at a recent NAACP convention that if supporters of Trayvon Martin really want to put their money where their mouths are, they can boycott the Florida orange juice industry.
“The true way generally when people don’t understand your plight is when you decide to exercise your buying power elsewhere,” he said at the Orlando, Fla., convention, CBS reported.
He made the comments in the context of condemning “stand your ground” laws. He’s not the first to raise the idea of boycotting Florida’s citrus growers and sellers in the days since George Zimmerman was acquitted of the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin — but he is one of the highest-profile figures to do so.
Hundreds of protesters at Philadelphia’s Love Park called for the same action on Sunday, just hours after learning of the acquittal.
