Unions in Greece are calling for a one-day nation strike to protest new proposed economic reforms — austerity measures that are a condition for receipt of eurozone bailout dollars.
Union members, however, say they’re tired of the cutbacks in pay and pensions, Agence France-Presse reported. They’re demanding a stop to the austerity and pushing forward with strikes and rallies, deploying thousands of members to key spots for pickets.
The strike will close down much of the country’s public services. Unions are targeting hospitals, rail service and the airlines, AFP said. This is the fourth such strike called by the unions in recent months.
Greece is due to receive $8.9 billion in aid from European Union and International Monetary Fund sources. But eurozone finance ministers say the country must put in effect more economic reforms and enact more cuts.
