Jennifer Lopez recently took fire for singing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to Turkmenistan dictator Gurbanguli Berdymukhamedov, but that’s hardly the sole singing gig she’s had with a leader of a country who rules with an iron fist.
In the past two years, J. Lo has earned more than $10 million performing for “some of the world’s worst thugs and their cronies,” the Human Rights Foundation reported. HRF finds her serial “serenading crooks and dictators” so egregious — followed by denial of knowledge of the leaders’ questionable human rights records — that the group has dubbed her “Jenny-from-the-block-who-doesn’t-Google,” the Hollywood Reporter said.
Among her noted audience members, HRF reported in Newser: Uzbek industrialist Azam Aslanov, known for his “corrupt” activites; repressive Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev; Chechen dictator Ramzan Kadyrov; and Russian oligarch Telman Ismailov.
She was scheduled to perform for Russia’s Alezander Yolkin — but the gig was cancelled because of his arrest.
“[Miss Lopez] can hardly claim ignorance of the nature and impact of her actions as she cozies up to dictators and their enablers,” HRF said, as Newser reported. “This is not about ignorance. It’s about greed.”
