Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is trying to exert his veto power and put a halt to lawmakers’ paychecks, in retribution to their stalled action on the state’s pension crisis.
The governor is set to formally announce his plan on Wednesday, The Associated Press reported. But in brief, it states: Lawmakers can say goodbye to their checks until they approve pension reforms. The governor is going to use his line-item veto power to stall the pay, AP reported.
The lawmakers’ salaries are reflected in the budget bill, before the governor for signing, AP reported.
The state faces a $100 billion unfunded pension liability, AP reported. That’s the highest amount for any state in the nation.
