A grand jury had been set to indict John and Patsy Ramsey on charges related to the killing of their daughter, 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenet, according to a Monday media report.
But the district attorney didn’t see proof in the finding and refused to sign off on the grand jury’s decision.
JonBenet was found dead on Christmas Day 1999 in the basement of her Boulder, Colo., home. Her parents denied killing her and instead pointed to an intruder. Prosecutors eventually cleared the parents. But after more than a year’s worth of meetings, a grand jury reported the existence of evidence that implicated the parents. The grand jury did not find the parents directly responsible, ABC reported. Rather, they said the parents were perhaps guilty of child abuse that led to JonBenet’s death.
“This grand jury, in effect, came up with a compromise finding. ’No, it’s not murder,’ but ’Yes, we think they were responsible’ for the death based on abuse,” according to ABC News.
The mother, Patsy, died in 2006. and the father, John, has since remarried.
