House Speaker John A. Boehner’s promise to stop running government via one-on-one meetings with President Obama and let the committee process commence already is crumbling, as congressional members can’t find consensus on how to proceed.
A fractured Republican Party can’t even agree on what that principle means, according to a report in The Hill.
Rep. Tom McClintock, California Republican, reportedly said Mr. Boehner’s vow to return to “regular order” was not a clear path on debt limit discussions, and questioned which committee would take the lead.
Rep. John Fleming, Louisiana Republican, described the process as “anything but [Mr. Boehner’s] negotiating a deal behind closed doors with the president and without our knowledge,” he said in The Hill.
And an unnamed congressional aide quoted in the report said Mr. Boehner’s pledge will mean “different things” to different members.
