Former Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo said he will honor his bet and smoke marijuana.
“Look, I made a bet … that if Amendment 64 [legalizing marijuana] passed … that I would smoke pot,” Mr. Tancredo said, in a press statement. “I will therefore smoke pot under circumstances [that] are legal under Colorado law.”
Colorado voters legalized marijuana smoking for recreational purposes in November. Then, Mr. Tancredo supported the referendum, in part, he said, because the federal government spends too much money and time chasing marijuana users.
“Our nation is spending tens of billions of dollars annually in an attempt to prohibit adults from using a substance objectively less harmful than alcohol,” the former Republican presidential candidate wrote in a November opinion piece, published before the vote.
Mr. Tancredo ran for president in 2008 and for governor in 2010.
