OPINION:
The New Jersey Legislature recently passed a bill that mandates only union workers be allowed to work on repairs to damages caused by Superstorm Sandy. The government funding allocated by Congress involves taxpayer dollars from everyone, union and nonunion alike.
New Jersey’s Democratic Legislature has clearly overstepped its authority. Could a state pass a bill that would restrict government funding to a single religious, racial or ethnic group? Certainly not. Members of Congress, Republicans, Democrats and independents, should have the New Jersey State Legislature withdraw the measure immediately — or have the funds held in escrow until the legislation is withdrawn.
President Obama and the Democrats have given priorities and exemptions to unions, but this specific action does not stand constitutional muster, and it should not be tolerated.
