A Florida judge has made history by allowing a birth certificate to list as parents a married lesbian couple and a gay man.
The judge’s decision wraps a two-year paternity fight among the two gay women — the married lesbians — and the gay male friend who donated his sperm, Reuters reports. The impregnated lesbian gave birth to a girl, and the gay man then decided he wanted to be part of his biological daughter’s life, Reuters reports.
The Miami-Dade Circuit Court judge’s ruling means the three — the lesbian couple and the gay man — have formally adopted the now-22-month-old girl, and all their names will be listed on the girl’s birth certificate, Reuters says. At the same time, the man will not be required to provide child support.
In a somewhat confusing outcome, the judge’s decision lists all three as parents on the birth certificate, but simultaneously gives the two women sole parental rights, and the man only visitation privileges, according to Reuters.
