Joe Arpaio, the Arizona lawman known by supporters and detractors alike as “America’s toughest sheriff” for his aggressive approach to law enforcement, has himself been hit by crime.

Mr. Arpaio said Tuesday he was the victim of credit card fraud, according to Reuters. The Maricopa County sheriff said thieves stole his Discover card numbers for $291 worth of purchases at a Jewel grocery store in Chicago.

“I haven’t been to Chicago since I was a young federal narcotics agent in 1957,” he said, according to Reuters. “So I sure couldn’t have been buying groceries in that supermarket.”

No arrests have been made, Reuters reported.
