Sonia Sotomayor appeared on “The Colbert Report” Monday night to talk about her new memoir, “My Beloved World,” but she stumbled upon an interesting confession in the process: She claims to be an independent.

Citing her history, Comedy Central funnyman Stephen Colbert asked the Supreme Court justice, “Why aren’t you a Republican if you believe in self-reliance?”

“How do you know I’m not?” Justice Sotomayor responded.

“Because Obama appointed you,” the host shot back, gaining laughter from the audience. “That’s the only litmus test I need. I’m not a senator. You can’t walk around me.”

“Surprisingly enough to you, I’m not a Democrat. I’m an independent,” Justice Sotomayor replied.

When asked what was the most conservative belief she held, the justice said she believed in the Constitution.

“Then I believe you’re not a Democrat,” Mr. Colbert quipped.

The justice refused to go into detail about her gun control beliefs, telling the host, “You’ll find out soon enough, when a case comes up.”
