House Majority Leader Eric Cantor still wears the Republican pin — but his language may be moving left. According to The Hill, which obtained excerpts of the Virginia Republican’s speech a day before he was due to speak at the American Enterprise Institute, Mr. Cantor called for aid for working families using language eerily similar to that of notable Democrats.
“Lately, it has become all too common in our country to hear parents fear whether their children will indeed have it better than they. And for all of us parents, that is a scary thought. Our goal should be to eliminate the doubt griping our nation’s families, and to restore their hope and confidence,” The Hill reported Mr. Cantor as planning to say on Tuesday. Mr. Cantor was also due to promise that Republicans would work “to ensure every American has a fair shot at earning their success and achieving their dreams.”
That last — the “fair shot” comment — comes straight from the speech book of President Obama — and of Theodore Roosevelt, The Hill reports.
In 2011, Mr. Obama called for a “fair shot” for all Americans. Mr. Obama made the comment before a crowd in Osawatomie, Kan., the very site of Roosevelt’s “New Nationalism” speech, which contained the path toward progressive politics, Public Integrity reported.
