Muriwai Beach in New Zealand was closed Wednesday after an estimated 14-foot-long shark killed a swimmer and then dodged bullets and disappeared, after police tried to shoot it.
Police have recovered the body of Adam Strange, a 46-year-old television and film director, according to The Associated Press.
Witness Pio Mose said he saw a swimmer struggle to ward off the advances of a “huge” shark and yelled for the man to swing to nearby rocks, but it was too late, AP reported.
“All of a sudden, there was blood everywhere,” the witness told AP. “I was shaking, scared, panicked.”
Police said Mr. Strange had been swimming about 650 feet offshore, AP reported. After the attack, they took a raft out to the scene and shot at the shark, but “it rolled over and disappeared” into the water, police told AP. They’re not sure if it’s still alive or not. They didn’t release the species of shark, either, AP said.
