New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is set for meetings Wednesday on gun control with Vice President Joseph R. Biden, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Sen. John McCain, according to a report from Roll Call.
The meetings are one-on-one, Roll Call says, and may include talks with other unnamed senators “throughout the day.” At 2 p.m., more details will be available, as Mr. Bloomberg is set to hold a press event at the White House.
Mr. Bloomberg’s push for gun control is a substantial one. His Independence USA PAC just spent $2 million in a special election in Illinois to help elect the replacement for former Rep. Jesse L. Jackson Jr. The election resulted in Mr. Bloomberg’s favor; Robin Kelly won the Democratic primary, vowing to take on the National Rifle Association in her Tuesday-evening victory speech.
Following that election, Mr. Bloomberg released a statement: “This is an important victory for common sense leadership on gun violence, a problem that plagues the whole nation. And it’s the latest sign that voters across the country are demanding change from their representatives in Washington.”
It’s Washington’s turn “to act” and enact “common sense gun legislation,” he said in his statement.
