A super PAC aiming to unseat Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was warned by the Federal Election Commission after it missed a deadline for filing required reports.

FEC officials sent a letter on Feb. 19 to Progress Kentucky, which was formed in December to oppose McConnell, to inform the group that “failure to timely file a complete report may result in civil money penalties, an audit or legal enforcement action,” Politico reports.

“The civil money penalty calculation for late reports does not include a grace period and begins on the day following the due date for the report,” the letter said.

The group was required to file its fundraising reports by Jan. 31. The report would have included the group’s December fundraising amounts.

The executive director of the PAC told Politico that the report has now been sent by regular mail.

Earlier this week, the group took fire for tweets about Mr. McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, that were perceived as racist. One of the tweets, as reported by Politico, was posted Feb. 14: “This woman has the ear of [McConnell] – she’s his wife. May explain why your job moved to China!”
