New York City firefighters tackled a man who was hacking at a woman with a meat cleaver on a busy Chinatown street Sunday, according to various reports.
The Associated Press reports that Jose Ortiz and James Trainor were working at the Engine Co. 9, Ladder Co. 6 firehouse when they saw a man dragging a screaming woman along Canal Street. The pair ran from the firehouse to help the woman just as the man pulled out his cleaver, AP reports..
“All of a sudden, I hear the cleaver go up, and he swings down,” Mr. Ortiz said. “He hit her in the head. … Now I’m thinking, ’I’ve got to grab this guy.’”
AP says surveillance video showed the man repeatedly slashing the woman — who was later identified as his wife — as firefighters yanked him off and subdued him. The woman fled but was later treated at a hospital. On Monday, she was still recovering, AP said.
The man, Ming Guang Huang, 28, was taken into police custody for attempted murder and transported to a nearby hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, AP said.
