Former Utah Gov. and Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman flipped views on gay marriage and said conservatives would do well to support same-sex unions.

In an op-ed written for the American Conservative, Mr. Huntsman — who has been widely viewed as a more moderate member of the Republican Party — argued the GOP should seize upon the issue and “push their states” for legislation allowing gay marriage.

“I’ve been married for 29 years,” he said. “My marriage has been the greatest joy of my life. There is nothing conservative about denying other Americans the ability to forge that same relationship with the person they love.”

So far, nine states and the District of Columbia have laws that allow gays to marry.
