The Democratic National Committee reported donations of $4.3 in January — but that’s significantly less than the amount needed to pay off its debt.

The Democratic Party finished 2012 $21.5 million in the red, Federal Elections Commission filings show, according to a Politico report. They paid roughly $700,000 of after-election debt, Politico said, bringing the current total to $20.7 million.

The DNC spent $3.9 million in January alone and still has $4.6 million cash on hand, Politico said.

By contrast, the Republican National Committee said it raised $6.9 million in January and has $7.1 million cash on hand, Politico reported. And debt?

The RNC paid all its debts at the end of 2012, Politico said.
