The U.S. Postal Service, already struggling to make ends meet as it pushes for a cost-cutting end to Saturday mail delivery, is nonetheless launching a new endeavor: a fashion line.

The agency, apparently inspired by its motto of providing delivery service regardless of weather conditions, has announced a new line of clothing, “Rain Heat & Snow,” according to a report in Fast Company. The clothing items will be made by The Wahconah Group and sold — hopefully, according to USPS statements — in department and specialty stores.

On its website, Postal Service Corporate Licensing Manager Steven Mills writes: “This agreement will put the Postal Service on the cutting edge of functional fashion. The main focus will be to produce Rain Heat & Snow apparel and accessories using technology to create ’smart apparel’ — also known as wearable electronics.”

And what are wearable electronics?

Apparel that reportedly incorporates technology, but the USPS release gives few other details.

The Ohio-based Wahconah Group is putting together a showroom in the Garment District in New York “to showcase their apparel lines to the fashion industry,” the USPS reports. The new USPS line will initially target men, but plans to create a women’s line are in the works, according to the release.
