DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. (AP) - Kevin Harvick hitched a ride to a slower mode of transportation to honor two Marine veterans _ Budweiser Clydesdales.
Harvick, his wife DeLana, and the Bud Dalmatian took a 0.4-mile ride on the famed horses to deliver Budweiser beer and Daytona 500 tickets at the home of race fans Justin Ryter and Jason Ryter. The twin brothers completed four years of active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps and recently returned home to Ormand Beach, Fla., after being honorably discharged.
Racing fans camped out their lawns and driveways to catch a glimpse of the NASCAR star and the Clydesdales.
Harvick knocked on the door to deliver the tickets and shook hands with the twins. He also gave each one a case of Bud.
“This is just one of many things that Budweiser does for our military guys,” Harvick said. “It’s been a lot of fun. We definitely disrupted the neighborhood this morning, but it’s for a good reason.”
The Ryters had beer, they had tickets, and they had a party. One man handed out business cards to the media for his wallpaper company. Some fans guzzled beer in the driveway well before noon.
Harvick and his wife volunteered after they learned his Sprint Cup sponsor was running the promotion.
“Any time you can honor any of our military guys for their service, and what they do for this country, is pretty neat to be a part of,” Harvick said. “When you add the hitch and the Clydesdales into the equation, it makes it even better.”
