Casting about for a viable GOP candidate for the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. John Kerry, Massachusetts Republicans are looking to two key members of Team Romney who dramatically raised their national profiles during last year’s presidential contest: Ann Romney, the wife of the candidate, and Taggart “Tagg” Romney, the candidate’s oldest son.
The Boston Herald reported Saturday that party leaders are talking about Mrs. Romney, even though she has expressed no interest in the seat and has never run for public office.
A special election will be held June 25 to replace Mr. Kerry, who is leaving to take over as secretary of state in the Obama administration.
Mrs. Romney was considered one of Mitt Romney’s biggest assets on the campaign trail, and her story of surviving multiple sclerosis and her well-received GOP convention speech have made her a popular figure in Massachusetts, according to the Herald’s Hillary Chabot.
Republicans are also talking about Tagg Romney, 42, who was one of his father’s chief advisers during the campaign. Like his father, Mr. Romney has worked as a venture capitalist.
