After Robert Griffin III and Adidas on Tuesday morning launched an advertising campaign centered on his targeted return for the start of the 2013 regular season, Griffin made public assurances he won’t rush his recovery from knee surgery.
“Feel like I need to say this..Although my goal is to start Week 1, that doesn’t mean I will compromise my career to do so,” Griffin tweeted.
He later added: “Starting Week 1 will be the result of healing, hard work, dedication & God’s anointing. No rush, just determination.”
That followed his tweet of a hyperlink to his new commercial. The tweet included the words: “I’m #allinforweek1.”
The 30-second ad, which was posted on the Adidas Football YouTube channel, is titled: “adidas Training & RGIII | “Blow Up” — All In For Week 1.”
Griffin narrates the commercial, saying, “Blow up last season; every win every loss; every headline. Blow it all up because all that matters is what you do next.”
The ad shows Griffin bench pressing, in addition to waving two ropes as part of an upper body strength and endurance exercise. It does not show him running or doing any type of lower body exercise.
An Adidas spokesman did not immediately respond to a question about whether the commercial was recorded before or after Griffin had surgery on Jan. 9 to revise the reconstruction of his ACL and repair the lateral collateral ligament and meniscus in his right knee.
Griffin on Feb. 2 said he expects to start the Redskins’ first game of the regular season on the weekend of Sept. 8. General manager Bruce Allen last Thursday shared that optimism but acknowledged Griffin’s status would not be determined until much later in Griffin’s rehabilitation.
