Spanish media is saying that cancer-stricken Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has been sent back to his country to die — not to recover from successful treatment received in Cuba, as previously and widely reported.

Doctors in Cuba couldn’t help him, according to Spain’s ABC, as reported by United Press International.

Mr. Chavez returned to his country’s capital city, Caracas, on Monday, after weeks of treatment in Cuba. He’s now receiving palliative care to relieve his pain and suffering, according to UPI. Doctors say no treatment exists that can improve his health, UPI reports.

UPI reports doctors have no plans to bring Mr. Chavez back to Cuba for more care.
