A Republican congressman in Missouri is standing strong in the face of a Democrat-backed push to outlaw certain weapons in the state, characterizing the effort as a Communist-style politics and vowing its legislative failure.

House Democrats are bringing forth a bill that requires certain semi-automatic rifle and pistol owners to either destroy or surrender their weapons within 90 days of enactment of the law, Fox News reports. The bill would also ban the manufacture and import of the weapons, Fox News adds.

Republican Rep. Caleb Jones voiced his displeasure, tweeting Thursday that “the only way this bill will pass is if a hammer and sickle is sewn onto Old Glory.”

Democrats proposed the bill in the wake of the school shootings in Newtown, Conn., in December.

Another bill Democrats have proposed would require parents who own weapons inform their children’s schools, Fox News reports.
