Hugo Chavez, 58, has wrapped up his treatment for cancer in Cuba and returned home to Venezuela, with plans to continue his presidency.
Mr. Chavez, who’s already served 14 years in that role, was re-elected in October 2012 for another six-year term, but was forced due to health reasons to delay his swearing-in ceremony, BBC reports. He’s been in Cuba receiving treatment since December. On Dec. 11, he underwent his fourth cancer surgery in 18 months, BBC said.
Venezuelans last week saw him for the first time in months — in bed with a newspaper and his two daughters by his side — via broadcast images of his recovery from Cuba, BBC reports.
On Twitter, Mr. Chavez wrote: “We have arrived back in the land of Venezuela. Thank you Lord!! Thanks to my beloved people!! We will continue our treatment here.”
He also thanked Cuban President Raul Castro and former leader Fidel Castro in separate messages on Twitter, BBC reports.
