Israeli police have detained the sister of U.S. comedian Sarah Silver, along with nine other women, for wearing improper religious clothing while praying at a holy site in Jerusalem.
Anat Hoffman, who heads a liberal Jewish women’s organization, said Israeli security apprehended the women at the Western Wall for wearing clothing that’s deemed fit for men only, The Associated Press reported. The Western Wall is one of the most holy sites in Israel.
Sarah Silverman’s sister, Susan, was taken into police custody with her teenage daughter. All 10 of the women are still in custody, Ms. Hoffman said, in the AP report.
Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asked governing officials to come up with a policy that allows non-Orthodox women and foreigners to pray at the nation’s holy sites, AP says.
