At least 18 are dead and more than 30 wounded in an early Friday morning suicide bomb attack outside a Shiite mosque in Pakistan.

Worshippers were leaving Friday prayers when the attacker struck, according to The Associated Press.

The rife between Shiite and Sunni Muslims — Sunnis see the minority Shiites as heretics, AP says — has escalated in recent months.

Friday’s blast targeted Shiites, but casualties included some Sunnis who were worshipping in a nearby mosque and were inadvertently caught in the suicide bomber’s path, the AP reports.
