A rogue reindeer who was supposed to hang with Santa for a Christmas lighting event in Dillon, Colo., had different ideas, jumping his enclosure and leading police on a chase that lasted for hours.

Dillon police ultimately captured the runaway — but not until the animal had ran through the night, across town, and across the Dillon Reservoir, United Press International reported. Meanwhile, Santa stayed in the La Riva building with visiting children and lit the lights, UPI said.

The reindeer — subdued — was returned to his enclosure only after police and animal control officers used a second reindeer as a decoy to help rein in the first.

“The reindeer are now in preparation for the upcoming flight around the world on Christmas Eve,” UPI said, crediting an incident report. “The reindeers made a promise to return next year to again add to the season’s festivities and delight of children.”
