OPINION:
The late Nelson Mandela experienced the worst of times and the best of times (“Nelson Mandela now ’belongs to the ages,’” Web, Dec. 5).
He spent 27 years in prison for opposing the brutal, racist white regime in South Africa, then became South Africa’s first democratically elected black president, and became highly respected and admired worldwide.
Perhaps his greatest legacy will be as an inspiration to future generations in the world to work toward racial equality, freedom, humanity, peace and compassion for others.
One might say Mr. Mandela was the good-will ambassador to the world, promoting education, the eradication of poverty and AIDS and furthering the ideals of justice.
