A popular Mexican restaurant in the trendy, artsy Soho section of New York City has a new menu item that scores high on the puke factor but nonetheless is bringing in the bucks: A pan-fried burger dotted and splashed with crickets.
It’s called the Grass-Whopper, and Antonjeria la Popular owners say it’s drawing in crowds, The New York Post reported.
“It’s ridiculous,” said Marco Shalma, the director of operations, in the newspaper. “People are coming from everywhere to try it.”
The burger was introduced as a menu item last week and sales have been hopping — from 20 a day to 100.
“I’m surprised,” Mr. Shalma said, in The New York Post. “People come here specifically to try the burger. We’ve definitely been busier since it was introduced.”
Insect-based meals may be on the rise, however. The publishing industry released two recipe books this year focusing on bug-based foods. And several others are scheduled for release in 2014, The New York Post said.
