After facing criticism for a lack of diversity, Twitter Inc. has hired the first woman to its board, just a month after it raised $2.09 billion in an initial public offering.
The appointment of former Pearson Plc Chief Executive Officer Marjorie Scardino, 66, is effective immediately, Twitter said today in a filing.
“Thank you. There couldn’t be a more exciting time in Twitter’s history to join!” she said in her first-ever tweet on Thursday.
The addition brings Twitter’s board to eight people, the Associated Press reported.
Sallie Krawcheck, a former Bank of America Corp. executive, said last month that Twitter’s lack of diversity was “a joke.” It showed Silicon Valley was no better than Wall Street when it came to female representation, she said, the AP reported.
Facebook Inc. faced the same issue when it went public in 2012, but now has two female directors.
