An Xbox One gamer became a viral hit after posting a video to YouTube showing him being penalized by his Kinect console for cursing in his own home.
Microsoft’s new Kinect technology can sense your motion, recognize your voice, and even monitor your heart rate, Slate magazine reports. Now, certain games are apparently monitoring your speech.
The video shows the game NBA 2K14 issuing a technical foul against the player, who goes by randomfrankp, for “foul language,” shortly after he drops an F-bomb in his living room.
“I can’t curse in my own house. I spent $530 for an Xbox One and you’re going to penalize me? [Expletive] you!” randomfrankp screams at his console in the video.
The PlayStation 4 version of NBA 2K14 also penalizes players for cursing, via the microphone on the PlayStation Camera, Slate said.
“This was a feature we incorporated to NBA 2K13 that we felt brought both realism to the game, and a more civilized online environment for our players,” game-maker 2K told Slate. “The result was so positive we have continued it in NBA 2K14.”
In another instance, Deadspin reported on Wednesday that a FIFA 14 player received an in-game letter from his soccer team telling him to “Please be aware that you are an ambassador for this football club and the language you have used puts us all in a bad light.”
