A generous tipper, or group of tippers, have been leaving massive tips for service staff at restaurants around the nation — in the thousand-dollar range — and following up with receipt posts to an Instagram account that reveals the motive behind the kindness: “Tipsforjesus.”

The tipper has left a $1,000 tip on a $266 bill in Los Angeles, MyFoxLA.com reported. The tipper also left a $10,000 tip at a University of Notre Dame restaurant and a $5,000 tip at a spot in Port Orchard, Wash., Fox News reported.

The tipper’s Instagram account states: “Doing the Lord’s work, one tip at a time.”

The massive tip at Notre Dame initially caused some angst for wait staff, who didn’t believe the $10,000 added in the tip line of an American Express charge was a valid charge, WNDU reported. The university issued this statement: “Notre Dame has been working with American Express on this matter to determine the validity of the tip. We hope that question can be resolved soon.”

The tippers, learning of the hesitation of the Notre Dame staff to cash in the tip, responded on their Instagram account, WNDU reported: “Let’s be clear, the Legends of Notre Dame tips were processed by AMEX and paid. Tipsforjesus pays its tabs. God bless! @notredame. Your move.”

Just Tuesday, Notre Dame officials said they received confirmation from American Express the $10,000 tip was valid.
