A Washington, D.C., park near the White House has been cleared and placed on lockdown Wednesday afternoon after a man allegedly threw a package through the White House fence.

A man was seen being handcuffed by Secret Service agents in Lafayette Park, across from the White House, the New York Daily News reported.

The object thrown over the fence was “not a dangerous item,” a Secret Service spokes man said.

NBC News White House correspondent Peter Alexander tweeted: “Secret Service says ’unattended package’ was thrown thru White House north fence line. Adult man arrested and detained.”

A white House reporter for The Associated Press tweeted: “Handcuffed man loaded by @SecretService outside WH NW gate. Penn Ave., Lafayette Park locked down.”
