When it comes to dropping the ball, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor may just take the cake.

The legal great was selected by event organizers for Times Square’s New Year’s Eve celebration to push the crystal button to begins the traditional ball drop at one minute before midnight.

Times Square Alliance President Tim Tompkins told the New York Times that Justice Sotomayor, a Bronx native, was selected because of her inspiring story of becoming the first Hispanic justice on the Supreme Court.

Justice Sotomayor is the first Supreme Court judge to lead the ball drop, though many politicians have assumed the role, including Bill and Hillary Clinton in 2008 and Secretary of State Colin Powell did, in 2004.
