Mayor Michael Bloomberg has spent about $650 million of his own money to various New York City causes over his 12-year reign — a shocking amount that nonetheless pales in comparison to his net worth, about $27 billion.

The New York Times discovered the expenditures after scouring various charity databases and public documents. And, the newspaper reported, that $650 million is actually on the low side.

Most of the mayor’s money went toward political campaigns and to museum upkeep; The Associated Press reported he spent $23 million on various campaigns and another $30 million to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, since 2002. His gun control efforts also received a large pot of his money.

He also spent $62,400 over 12 years to help clean the large saltwater fish tanks in City Hall, AP reported.

Mr. Bloomberg is estimated to be worth $27 billion, Forbes Magazine said.
