OAKLAND, CALIF. (AP) - The Denver Broncos have broken the NFL record for most points by a team in a season.

Peyton Manning threw a 63-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas with 5:37 left in the second quarter to eclipse New England’s single-season mark of 589 set in 2007. Denver entered the game needing 18 points to surpass the Patriots’ mark.

It was Manning’s third TD pass of the game, giving the Broncos a 24-0 lead. Matt Prater kicked a 34-yard field goal earlier in the second quarter to tie New England’s record.

Manning also entered the game needing 266 yards passing to better Drew Brees’ single-season mark of 5,476 set in 2011 with New Orleans. Manning broke Tom Brady’s single-season touchdown pass record last week by throwing his 51st.
