New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is poised to sign a bill that will give illegal immigrants the ability to pay the same lower college tuition rates as state residents.
That would make New Jersey the 18th state in the nation to give illegal immigrants the lower tuition benefit, Newsmax reported.
The bill that’s headed to Mr. Christie has been altered a bit from the version that was debated by state politicos over the past few weeks. The New York Times reported that a provision that was approved by the legislature to make financial aid available to illegal immigrants was removed. That removal came at the insistence of Mr. Christie, The New York Times reported.
California, New Mexico and Texas let illegal immigrants obtain financial aid for college, the newspaper said.
The bill before Mr. Christie would only let those illegal immigrants who have graduated from a high school in New Jersey – and those who were at the high school for at least three years — the ability to get the in-state college tuition rate.
Hispanics, especially, had rallied around Mr. Christie during his campaign promises to pass a law granting illegals the lower tuition rates, Newsmax reported.
