A Harvard University student is due to make his initial appearance in federal court on Wednesday to face charges related to what prosecutors are saying was a fake bomb threat to escape exams.
The U.S. Attorney’s office in Boston alleged in a criminal complaint against Eldo Kim that he sent numerous fake emails to campus authorities, claiming bombs were placed in four different buildings, The Associated Press reported. Prosecutors said the timing of the emails was suspicious, as they were received just minutes before Mr. Kim was scheduled to take a final exam in one of the supposed targeted buildings, AP said.
The four buildings on the Cambridge, Mass., campus were evacuated and all students’ exams in the facilities were canceled on Monday. Investigators combed through the buildings, but never found any explosive devices.
Harvard issued the briefest of statements about the federal charges that were filed, saying officials were “saddened,” but declining to elaborate.
